Proper design of roof assemblies depends on many variables; there is no universal solution to all buildings. Environmental factors including site location and context, orientation, wind exposure, and drainage must be considered along with internal factors such as building occupancy, mechanical systems, maintenance practices and overall method of construction for the building. These factors must be accounted for while meeting building codes and energy performance requirements.

Roofing design is more than selecting a membrane. All components of the assembly must be carefully considered including; roof decks, thermal barriers, underlayments, vapor retarders, insulations, cover boards, membranes, and flashings. Each component must be selected based on performance and compatibility of materials.

Steep Slope
Many options for steep slope roofing are available including; asphalt shingles, clay and concrete tile, slate shingles, metal roof panels, metal shingles, wood shingles, and mineral surfaced roll roofing.

Low Slope
Many options for low slope roofing are available including; built-up roofing, modified bitumen roofing, thermoset single-ply (EPDM), thermoplastic single-ply (TPO, PVC, KEE), sprayed polyurethane foam roofing, liquid applied coatings.
