Bell & Spina, P.C. was retained to assist Syracuse University in preparing multiple concept design ideas for the conversion of the existing Haven Dining Hall into residence rooms.
The main goal of the project is designing student rooms arranged in private and semi-private suite configurations. Ideally there will be approximately 32 new beds in a combination of room types such as single occupancy, 2-person suites, or 2-story townhouse/apartments. Each type will have private bedrooms and a private bathroom and one Resident Assistant suite will be required in the converted area. A large main lounge space, in addition to the small lounges found on each floor of the connecting Tower is also necessary in the converted dining hall.
Scheme elements explored a new stair and elevator access, new single story entrance, a “ramped” connector bridge from the Tower, and an extension of the building envelope to be in the same vertical plane as the exterior wall at the basement level.
